BOSTON, MA (October 1, 2025) – City Year Greater Boston (CYGB), an education- and workforce-development-focused nonprofit, is pleased to announce Erika Alvarez Werner has been selected as the organization’s new executive director.Ěý

“On behalf of the Board, I am thrilled to welcome Erika Alvarez Werner as the new Executive Director of City Year Greater Boston,” said CYGB Board Chair and Partner at Bain & Company, Shweta Bhardwaj. “Erika has been a lifelong advocate of student success in Massachusetts, as a former City Year alumna and leader with the Department of Education and Boston Plan for Excellence. At City Year Greater Boston, she’s co-architected the post-pandemic strategy for the organization and has worked tirelessly with her team to execute it with tremendous success.”Ěý

Alvarez Werner brings a broad range of experience from the government and non-profit sectors, but her leadership with City Year is rooted in her experience serving as a City Year Team Leader in Boston Public Schools from 1997-1999. Following her years of service, Alvarez Werner studied education policy and worked in various roles, including as the Boston Promise Corps Director at Boston Plan for Excellence, and the Director of Strategic Equity Initiatives for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Alvarez Werner returned to City Year in August 2022 as the Chief of Staff for CYGB.ĚýĚý

“When someone told me 25 years ago, ‘you have to do City Year,’ I listened, and it changed my life,” Alvarez Werner said. “I found my calling and dedicated my life to advancing educational opportunities for É«˝ç°É. When you experience City Year firsthand, you see what’s possible when you invest in young people and create the conditions for their success.”Ěý

Alvarez Werner has served as the Interim Executive Director since November 2024, and City Year Market President Pete November said, “Erika has shown she is absolutely the right leader to take City Year Greater Boston into its next phase. Thanks to her leadership, this became an easy choice for me, the CYGB board, and City Year’s national team.”Ěý

This year, City Year Greater Boston AmeriCorps members will serve full time in 15 Boston and Medford public schools, reaching more than 10,000 É«˝ç°É each day. During their year of service, AmeriCorps members serve as Student Success Coaches, providing targeted academic support in English and Math, behavioral mentoring, and attendance coaching to help É«˝ç°É develop the skills to be successful in school and life.
